BASSET (Beverage Alcohol Seller and Server Education) is a service for provided by the
Tinley Park Police Department

 

The goal of the BASSET training program is to reduce the number and severity of
alcohol related incidents leading to death, injury and property damage. Typical incidents
include traffic accidents, pedestrian falls and accidents and intentional damage and injury
caused by excessive alcohol consumption. This is accomplished through the education of
servers, clerks, managers and owners of establishments that sell and service alcoholic
beverages. This program is taught throughout Illinois and similar programs are taught
throughout the United States. The instructor for the class is certified and registered with
the Illinois Liquor Control Commission.


Some of the course objectives to be taught are:
1. The nature and magnitude of accidents and injuries resulting from the
consumption of alcohol.


2. The importance of responsible alcohol service for the public and the
establishment the server works for.


3. The physiological effects of alcohol.


4. State and local laws relating to sales and service of alcohol.


5. Liability issues.


6. Fraudulent identification and how to recognize it and deal with it.


7. Behavioral cues for alcohol misuse.


8. Effective strategies for intervening and preventing excessive drinking by patrons
that become intoxicated.


9. Techniques for terminating service to patrons.
