Tinley named 46th safest city in U.S.

The National Council for Home Safety and Security (NCHSS) recently named Tinley Park as one of the Top 100 Safest Cities in America. Tinley Park, which came in at 46, was the highest-ranking south suburb on the list.

To compile the list, the NCHSS reviewed the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics, along with its own internal research. The NCHSS eliminated any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI and removed cities with populations of less than 50,000.

The remaining cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery), property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft) and officer count. These variables were weighted, with violent crimes accounting for the majority of the total due to their severity.

Nine other Illinois municipalities, including Oak Lawn, also made the list.
