Mallow, Ireland Update

Spring 2003

The first official visit by a group of Tinley Park Sister Cities Commissioners will take place in January 2003. Five Commissioners will meet with officials in Mallow to explore activities for 2003. The volunteer Commissioners purchase their own airfare and will pay their own expenses while on the trip. Sister Cities Commissioners spend more than just their time in supporting our sister city relationships.

Mallow, Ireland is a beautiful town set in the heart of the Blackwater Valley. The scenery around Mallow is superb. In November 2002 Louise Geaney of The Corkman newspaper wrote a nice article about the Blackwater Resource Development Group efforts to publicize tourism in the area. Here is an excerpt of the article:"Hillwalkers, tourists and country lovers are being encouraged to put on their walking boots and head for the hills of North Cork.

As one of North Cork's most valuable assets, the Blackwater Way covers 188 kilometres of scenic walking routes, and is currently being earmarked as a National Waymarked Way and European E8 long distance walking trail.

Comprising the Knockmealdown Mountains, rich farms and woodlands of the Blackwater Valley, slopes of the Nagle Hills, Paps Mountains, as well as stretches of beautiful isolation and historic settlements, the Avondhu and Duhallow trail continues to attract many visitors." Along with walking, Mallow offers spectacular fishing, golf and a very active horse racing schedule. Racing is a twelve month a year activity in Mallow. 19 race dates are already scheduled for 2003 including a three day Easter Festival meet. Complete information on days, times admission and facility in formation is available on the Cork Racecourse web site (http://www.corkracecourse.ie/index1.htm)

The Mallow Golf Club operates an 18 hole, 6,559 yard, par 72 course that is superb. It is a tree-lined "parkland" style course with beautiful views of the Mushera and Galtee mountains. The scenery alone is worth the trip.

The next "Mallow Update" will go out after our return from Mallow.
