Patrol

The Patrol Division provides emergency and non-emergency services to the community 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. The Patrol Division is directly responsible for the protection of life and property, prevention of criminal activity, apprehension of criminal offenders, and investigation of traffic collisions.
 
Accident Investigation
The Tinley Park Police Department Accident Investigation Unit is staffed by three sergeants and six patrol officers. Five members are certified by the State of Illinois as crash reconstruction specialists. The Accident Investigation Unit is responsible for the investigation and reconstruction of fatal and very serious personal-injury crashes.

Animal Control
The Tinley Park animal control officer (ACO) is responsible for providing non-police, enforcement-related services that do not involve criminal investigation. The ACO focuses on locating, capturing and transporting animals at large that may present health or safety issues to the animal shelter.

  • Animal bites
  • Animals running at large
  • Appearing in court to testify regarding animal control cases
  • Arranging for adoption or disposal of unknown pets
  • Cruelty complaints
  • Enforcing animal control ordinances
  • Investigating violations of animal control and animal welfare ordinances
  • Issuing warnings and/or citations as required
  • Injured or dangerous animals
  • Neglect or abandonment
  • Pet impoundment
  • Providing animal control for wild animals on public or private property if the animal is injured or poses a threat to human safety
  • Releasing pets to owners upon payment of fees
Bike Patrol
A number of patrol officers have been trained to patrol their assigned zones utilizing a police bicycle. The Bicycle Patrol Unit allows for alternative patrol techniques. The advantages of bicycle patrol include: 

  • The ability to have more frequent positive contacts with community members
  • Patrolling areas inaccessible to patrol vehicles
  • The promotion of bicycle safety education with the public and in the schools
K-9 Unit
The Tinley Park Police Department has one K-9 unit consisting of one police officer and one police dog, Yambo.
 
Truck Enforcement
Several patrol officers have been trained to recognize and enforce traffic laws related to commercial vehicles. From pickup trucks to semitrailers, these officers observe and address: 
 
  • Equipment violations
  • Safety violations
  • Size and weight violations
With increased commercial motor vehicle traffic resulting from two area interstate highways, the objective of this unit is traffic safety through compliance.
