In addition to the online Flood Zone Boundary Map (the floodplain map for the Village of Tinley Park), flood maps and flood protection resources are available at the Tinley Park Public Library. Additionally, a list of links to flood information and prevention resources has been included below. You may also contact the Planning Department at Village Hall to see if you are in a mapped regulatory floodplain by calling (708) 444-5100.

If requested, the Public Works Department also can visit your property to review its flood problem and explain ways to stop flooding or prevent flood damage. Call the Public Works Department at (708) 444-5500 to schedule an appointment. These services are free to Village residents. The Village also has numerous informational resources below that can assist in this area.

Flood Insurance Information

Community Rating Service (CRS) Program

According to FEMA’s website, the Community Rating System (CRS) recognizes and encourages community floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum NFIP standards. Depending upon the level of participation, flood insurance premium rates for policyholders can be reduced up to 45%. Besides the benefit of reduced insurance rates, CRS floodplain management activities enhance public safety, reduce damages to property and public infrastructure, avoid economic disruption and losses, reduce human suffering, and protect the environment.

The Village of Tinley Park is pleased to inform you that in 2014 the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Community Rating System (CRS) program has recertified Tinley Park’s Class 6 standing, which will continue to provide you with reduced flood insurance premium rates. The successful annual CRS review of the Village’s flood management activities qualifies affected residents for a 20% reduction in flood insurance rates on properties within the Special Flood Hazard Area. Properties outside that area receive a 10% reduction in rates. This recertification indicates that our flood mitigation efforts and community outreach programs continue to be successful.

Flooded Buildings and Improvement Requirements
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) requires that if the cost of reconstruction, rehabilitation, addition or other improvements to a building equals or exceeds 50% of the building’s market value, then the building must meet the same construction requirements as a new building. Substantially damaged buildings must also be brought up to the same standards (i.e., a residence damaged so that the cost of repairs equals or exceeds 50% of the building’s value before it was damaged must be elevated above the base flood elevation).

Elevation Certificates
An elevation certificate is a certificate that verifies the elevation data of a structure on a given property relative to the ground level. The elevation certificate is used by local communities and builders to ensure compliance with local floodplain management ordinances and is also used by insurance agents and companies in the rating of flood insurance policies.
