Groundbreaking closer for Brookside Marketplace

Released: September 6, 2004

Tinley Park officials are looking forward to the official groundbreaking for Brookside Marketplace, a major new shopping center planned for the Village.

Minneapolis-based developer Ryan Cos. closed last week on the purchase of the 117-acre site at the corner of 191 st Street and Harlem Avenue, allowing preliminary site preparation to begin within the next week. A groundbreaking ceremony is anticipated in early fall.

“Brookside Marketplace is certain to become one of our Village’s most popular attractions, and we are anxious to work with the developer to create a center that residents and visitors alike will enjoy and be proud of,” said Mayor Ed Zabrocki.

Ryan Cos. retail development director Daniel Lillis said crews will be at the site during the next week for initial clearing of the property and detention pond preparation. The center, which will include a Super Target, is expected to be open in October 2005.

“We’re coordinating the official groundbreaking ceremony with the Village to make sure everyone involved can be there,” Lillis said.

Trustee Patrick Rea, chairman of the Village Board’s Finance and Economic Development Committee, said the shopping center will benefit the entire community.

“This development has the potential to be the largest retail area in town,” he said. “As such, the impact it has on our tax base will be an enormous benefit to our residents.”

Super Target will offer its regular line of merchandise along with a full-service grocery store and pharmacy. Brookside Marketplace will also feature another large anchor store, 14 smaller stores, up to three full-service restaurants, two fast-food restaurants and a bank.

To accommodate the expected increase in traffic, Will County will widen 191st Street from two to four lanes between Harlem and 80 th Avenues. Turn lanes will also be added at the shopping center location. Roadwork construction will begin this fall.
