Village receives budget award

The Government Finance Officers Association recently awarded the Village of Tinley Park with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the Village’s current 2019 budget, which ends April 30. This award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting that a municipality can receive and represents a significant achievement by an organization.

"I thank the staff for their efforts and support," Village Treasurer/Finance Director Brad Bettenhausen said. "All departments pitched in to help toward achieving this favorable outcome."

Converting the Village’s budget document to the recommended format has been a longtime goal of Bettenhausen and the Finance Department. Over the past several years, incremental changes have been made to the budget document toward this objective. With the recent addition of Assistant Treasurer/Finance Director Michael Zonsius to the department, a final push was made to complete the process and submit the budget for review.

“The notification of this award was a wonderful Christmas present," Bettenhausen said.

In order to receive the budget award, an applicant had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity's budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communication device. Budget documents must be rated "proficient" in all four categories, as well as in 14 mandatory criteria within those categories, for the applicant to receive the award.

This was the first year that the Village applied for the award.
