Teenage boy charged in July 1 swatting incident
Posted: Aug. 7, 2026
Tinley Park police on Friday charged a teenage boy with two counts of felony disorderly conduct in connection with a July 1 swatting incident at a home in the 16400 block of Bormet Drive.
Police responded to the home the morning of July 1 after receiving a report that a man had shot family members inside the house and was threatening to shoot responding officers. When police arrived, the man came out of his home holding a handgun, and officers ordered him to drop it, which he did. Police safely took him into custody without anyone getting hurt.
Police determined that no one inside the home had been injured and that the man had been the victim of a swatting call, which involves someone making a false emergency report intended to generate a large police response to an unsuspecting person's location.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police executed a search warrant Friday morning at the boy’s home and took him into custody in connection with the incident. The boy was charged with disorderly conduct – false report of offense, and disorderly conduct – false request for an ambulance, both felonies.
The Tinley Park Police Department would like to recognize the outstanding work of its Investigations Unit for their diligence, professionalism, and persistence throughout the investigation. Their efforts were instrumental in identifying the suspect, developing probable cause, and bringing this investigation to this point.

Tinley police partner with local agencies for Operation Small Sledgehammer
Posted: July 28, 2026
Over the past several months, communities throughout the south suburbs and surrounding areas have experienced a significant increase in smash-and-grab burglaries targeting businesses with Illinois video gaming terminals. In response, the Tinley Park Police Department partnered with the Berwyn Police Department, the Illinois Gaming Board, the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, the Southwest Major Crimes Unit (SWMCU), and other local law enforcement agencies for Operation Small Sledgehammer throughout the south suburbs during the early morning hours on Wednesday, July 22.
“This complex, multi-jurisdictional investigation demonstrates what can be accomplished when law enforcement agencies work together with a shared commitment to public safety,” Tinley Park Police Chief Tom Tilton said.
As a result of Operation Small Sledgehammer, multiple people were indicted on numerous felony charges, including armed violence (a Class X felony), weapons offenses (Class X and Class 2 felonies), burglary (Class 2 felony), and theft (Class 1 felony). Search warrants executed during the operation resulted in the seizure of four Draco-style firearms equipped with high-capacity magazines, a Glock pistol fitted with an illegal conversion device ("switch") and drum magazine, an additional Glock pistol, approximately 20 grams of heroin, multiple bottles of codeine, more than $10,000 in U.S. currency, multiple vehicles, cellular telephones, and other evidence connected to this organized criminal enterprise.

Samuel Shabaz, 62, of Chicago, was charged Wednesday with felony aggravated robbery after an incident Nov. 6 at the Tropical Smoothie Café, 7101 W 183rd St., Tinley Park.
The Tinley Park Police Department responded to the business at 6:53 p.m. Nov. 6 after getting a call that a robbery had just occurred. Upon arrival, witnesses provided officers with a detailed physical description of the offender, who they said had implied he had a handgun and stole $300 before driving away in a black 2004 Toyota Camry. Police used surveillance and license plate reader (LPR) technology to help identify the vehicle used in the robbery, which was determined to be stolen from Schererville, Ind. Police subsequently recovered the stolen vehicle and processed it for evidence. Items recovered inside the vehicle helped to identify Shabaz as the suspect.
During the investigation, detectives learned that the Countryside Police Department had contact with Shabaz four days after the Tropical Smoothie Café robbery during a disturbance call. Tinley Park investigators shared still images from the robbery with Countryside police, who positively identified the man in the images as Shabaz. Notably, Shabaz was wearing the same clothing during his contact with Countryside police as he was during the robbery.
Evidence that police obtained during the investigation placed Shabaz in the area of the Tropical Smoothie Café at the time of the robbery. Investigators showed photo arrays to the victims, who positively identified Shabaz as the offender. Investigators also learned that Shabaz had an extensive criminal history and was convicted and incarcerated for an armed robbery in the past.
The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved an arrest warrant for felony aggravated robbery, and Shabaz turned himself in on Jan. 14 at the Tinley Park Police Department. A bond hearing is scheduled for Jan. 15 at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
The Tinley Park Police Department extends its appreciation to the detectives and officers whose professionalism and dedication were instrumental in this investigation. Police also want to give special acknowledgment to the Countryside Police Department for their valuable assistance and coordination.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
